WEBDESK: Pakistan, along with the rest of the world, observed World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2025. This day is celebrated each year to highlight the importance of press freedom and to recognize the hard work and sacrifices made by journalists.
The United Nations established World Press Freedom Day through its first announcement in 1993. Since 1993 World Press Freedom Day continues to highlight both journalist rights and the necessity of protecting reporters during their truthful reporting.
Journalists throughout the world encounter threats as well as violent attacks and fatal risks during their professional duties. Since 1992 the Committee to Protect Journalists reports that over 1,400 journalists died while carrying out their profession.
In Pakistan, top leaders issued special messages to mark the day. President Asif Ali Zardari said that freedom of speech and a free press are basic parts of the Constitution of Pakistan. He praised the role of the media in speaking up for the poor, fighting corruption, and keeping the public informed.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also shared his thoughts. He said that journalists in Pakistan have made many sacrifices in the line of duty, and their services should be respected. He stressed that World Press Freedom Day is not only about celebrating journalism but also about remembering the responsibilities that come with it. He warned against the spread of fake news and propaganda, saying that the media must not be used for political gain.
Both leaders agreed that a free and responsible press is important for any democracy. They encouraged news outlets to stick to facts and maintain high journalistic standards.
During the observance of World Press Freedom Day Pakistani journalists and media organisations organized seminars while publishing reports and displaying tributes online. Journalists used the special day to demand better legal frameworks that would better safeguard reporters doing risky assignments in challenging conditions.
The commemoration of World Press Freedom Day serves to recognize those who reveal information to society with their personal safety often at risk. This day serves two purposes by reminding both public institutions and citizens that daily protection of freedom for the press remains essential.
