WEBDESK: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is expected to meet soon due to growing tensions between Pakistan and India. The situation worsened after a deadly terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people on April 22.

India has blamed Pakistan for the false flag Pahalgam operation yet Pakistan officially rejects it. Pakistan supports a completely impartial investigation as the only appropriate means to determine the source of violence.

Following the attack, India made a decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. The 1960 treaty regulates the water distribution between Pakistan and India across the Indus River system. The worldwide community views treaty suspension as a substantial development because of its escalating concerns.

The ongoing tensions led Pakistan to enforce a ban against Indian airline flights. The increasing tensions between Pakistan and India among two nuclear states continues to add more pressure on the situation according to observers who warn about potential worsening conditions unless proper management takes place.

Because of these rising tensions, the UNSC is closely watching the developments. Evangelos Sekeris, who is currently serving as the president of the UNSC, said the Council may call an emergency meeting if things continue to escalate. He also urged both countries to stay calm and solve their differences through peaceful dialogue.

The United Nations Security Council functions as a vital force for achieving global security and peaceful maintenance across international territories. A strategic intervention by the UNSC would offer negotiation opportunities to the conflicting parties in order to prevent escalation into bigger struggles.
