ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif officially opened the Murree Road underpass on May 23, 2025, marking a major achievement for the city’s infrastructure.
Islamabad has taken a big step forward in improving traffic flow with the inauguration of the new Murree Road underpass.
Murree Road underpass
The Murree Road underpass is located at the busy intersection of Murree Road and Srinagar Highway. This new underpass stretches 479 meters long and has three lanes for traffic moving in each direction.
The bridge above it was also widened to add two extra lanes on both sides, making it easier for vehicles to pass smoothly. Additionally, four slip roads were expanded to improve traffic movement.
A main advantage of the Murree Road underpass is that it makes driving between Islamabad Airport and Murree signal-free. It will mean people travel more quickly and traffic jams will be stopped which usually cause lengthy hold-ups along this route.
Fewer stops will mean cars burn less fuel which produces fewer emissions for the environment.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the fast completion of the Murree Road underpass, which took only 35 days a record time for such a project. He thanked the Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) for their hard work and dedication in finishing the underpass ahead of schedule.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also spoke about ongoing plans to make Islamabad more beautiful and traffic-friendly. He mentioned upgrades to street lighting and future projects to ease congestion at other busy points like Shaheen Chowk and Kashmir Chowk. There are also plans to widen the bridge at Faizabad Chowk and build more underpasses on Srinagar Highway.
The new underpass will make traveling to Murree easier for people. This is part of a bigger plan to bring Islamabad’s roads up to date and to reduce the commute time.
