KARACHI: The Sindh government has declared a public holiday in Umerkot district on Wednesday, April 17, to ensure the smooth conduct of the by election in National Assembly constituency NA-213.
According to a notification issued by the district administration, the holiday will apply to all government and private offices, educational institutions, and businesses within the Umerkot district. The announcement was made to facilitate voters and election staff participating in the by-election.
This seat became vacant after the unfortunate passing of Nawab Yousuf Talpur, who had won the NA-213 seat in the 2024 general elections. Talpur died in February this year, prompting the Election Commission to schedule a by-election for April 17.
In order to maintain law and order and support the electoral process, the authorities considered it necessary to give a holiday across the district.
Security has been tightened in the region, with law enforcement agencies deployed at polling stations to ensure peaceful voting. The administration has urged citizens to make full use of the holiday by coming out and voting responsibly.
Election officials are confident that the holiday will contribute to higher voter turnout and a well organised polling process. All preparations have been finalised, and ballot boxes and other election material have already been dispatched to respective stations.
This holiday applies strictly to the Umerkot district and is not observed in other areas of Sindh.
