WEBDESK: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on Saturday, announced that they are looking for a new head coach, as Aaqib Javed is expected to step away from his current role as head coach of the national team. Aaqib Javed, who has been serving as the interim head coach, is now likely to shift to the role of Director of the High-Performance Centre.
The PCB has invited applications from Level III qualified coaches with a minimum of 10 years of experience coaching national or domestic cricket teams.
This decision follows the resignation of former director Nadeem Khan, leaving the position vacant. Aaqib Javed, with his years of experience, is seen as a strong candidate for this new role.
The PCB has opened applications for both the head coach and high-performance director roles.
Javed initially took over as the white-ball head coach in November after Gary Kirsten stepped down shortly before Pakistan’s tour of Australia. Later, his role was extended across all formats after Jason Gillespie’s resignation. Although Aaqib Javed’s term was initially meant to continue until the Champions Trophy 2025, it was recently extended to cover Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand.
That extension has now ended, with the PCB deciding not to renew his role further.
Despite this, Aaqib Javed remains committed to Pakistan cricket. Reports suggest that he is still eager to contribute to the development of players and is interested in the high-performance role, which focuses on training and long-term player growth.
With limited local candidates available, the PCB may also consider international coaches for the head coach position. However, sources say the board may avoid big names this time around.
