WEBDESK: The United States and Ukraine have signed a major agreement to strengthen their economic and strategic partnership. The US-Ukraine minerals deal will give American companies preferred access to Ukraine’s critical mineral resources, while also helping rebuild Ukraine’s economy after years of war.
Signed in Washington, D.C., the US-Ukraine minerals deal was finalised by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. The deal also includes the creation of a joint investment fund to support Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Ukraine holds large reserves of valuable minerals used in electronics, batteries, and military equipment. Through this deal, U.S. companies can invest directly in mining and development projects. In return, Ukraine gains financial support and investment to help rebuild infrastructure damaged during the ongoing war with Russia.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko signed the deal in a ceremony in Washington.
“The agreement clearly signals the Trump Administration’s commitment to a free, sovereign, prosperous Ukraine,” the US Treasury wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The US-Ukraine minerals deal is also seen as a sign of growing trust and cooperation between the two countries. According to Ukrainian officials, the US-Ukraine minerals deal shows that the U.S. is committed to Ukraine’s future. Svyrydenko stated that Ukraine is hopeful the agreement will lead to more support, including security aid.
The US remains Ukraine’s largest military donor since Russia’s 2022 invasion, providing over $72 billion in aid, according to data from the Kiel Institute.
In its announcement, the Treasury said the partnership acknowledges “the significant financial and material support that the people of the United States have provided to the defence of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion.”
Earlier in March, Trump and Zelensky got into a argument in the White House over Ukraine’s war efforts and U.S. support, culminating in a heated exchange in front of reporters.
