WEBDESK: Today marks the global observance of Labour Day throughout Pakistan and other nations where people recognize the achievements of workers while supporting their equality and well-being.

This year’s Labour Day theme is Social justice and decent work. Safety and health of workers.It highlights the importance of safe working conditions, fair wages, and social protections for labourers. Pakistan, like many other countries, has declared an official holiday to mark the day.

Several organisations including trade unions, worker associations and civil society collectives have scheduled meetings and demonstrations which educate their members about working class fundamental rights. The movement aims to establish workers’ rightful position in national growth and demands better safeguards against workplace mistreatment.Various trade unions, worker associations, and civil society groups are holding rallies and seminars to raise awareness about the basic rights of the working class. The goal is to recognise their role in national development and to call for stronger protections against exploitation.

In his message, President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the need to equip workers and youth with modern skills to stay relevant in today’s changing job market. He urged collaboration between governments, private enterprises, and educational institutions to build a skill-focused ecosystem.

“This day reminds us of the historic struggle of workers for their rights and dignity. We must reaffirm our commitment to fair wages, safe workplaces, and social protection,” the president stated. He also called workers the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, noting that they power industries, agriculture, and public services.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his Labour Day message, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workplace safety and health. He highlighted the National Occupational Safety and Health Profile, a first for Pakistan, which aims to ensure safer conditions for all workers.

The Prime Minister also noted expansions in programs like the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) and Workers Welfare Fund (WWF). He added that skill development through NAVTTC and TEVTAs is helping youth and women access better job opportunities.

“Let us all work together government, employers, and civil society to build a culture that respects labour and ensures decent work for everyone,” he said.
