WEBDESK: A tragic Karachi accident claimed the lives of two young men late Saturday night in the New Chali area. Zaid Ali and Noor Mohammed Aslam were riding a motorcycle when a heavy trailer hit them near the roundabout, killing both on the spot.

According to the police, the trailer was coming from I.I. Chundrigar Road when it collided with the motorcycle. The victims’ bodies were taken to Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital for legal formalities.

“The trailer was coming from II Chundrigar Road towards the old CIA Centre while the victims were on their way from Techno City using Altaf Husain Hali Road,” SHO Tanoli said.

He added that the trailer hit the victims when they reached New Chali roundabout, dying on the scene.

The bodies were shifted to the Trauma Centre of Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi for legal formalities.

The driver, Abid Ali, has been arrested and the trailer impounded. Police believe careless driving led to the Karachi accident, though the driver claimed the bikers were over speeding and ended up under the trailer’s wheels.

A case has been registered under Section 320 of the Pakistan Penal Code based on a complaint filed by the victims’ uncle.

This Karachi accident is just one in a growing list of similar tragic events involving heavy vehicles. In 2024 alone, nearly 500 people have died and over 4,800 have been injured in road mishaps, many of them in Karachi accidents involving large trucks and trailers.

On Friday, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the provincial government had formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the causes of traffic accidents that had suddenly increased since November last in the metropolis.

Speaking at a press conference, he said that since November 2024, 603 people had been killed in road traffic accidents, 160 of them involving heavy vehicles.
