Petrol prices are likely to fall from April 16 for the next fortnight.

The final announcement will be made on April 15 regarding the prices.

According to reports, the government is expected to give major relief to the public by announcing a cut of Rs10 in the prices of petrol and diesel.

Current petrol prices

The government is currently charging about Rs86 per litre on both petrol prices and diesel. Although the General Sales Tax (GST) is zero on all petroleum products, the government is charging Rs70 per litre of petroleum development levy on petrol, diesel, and high-octane products that normally impact the masses.

In another developement, Pakistan and International Monetary Fund (IMF) are expected to begin talks tomorrow.

In this regard, the government may impose a Rs5 per litre carbon levy on petrol and diesel as part of the talks.

The talks will focus on preparations for the upcoming federal budget and other key economic matters.

On March 16, 2025, after global petroleum prices dropped, the government increased the petroleum levy from Rs60 to Rs70 per litre. The Petroleum Division strongly opposed the idea of using a Rs10 per litre increase in the petroleum levy to fund electricity tariff relief. They called the plan unfair and warned that it would increase the burden on fuel consumers and damage the sector’s recovery.
