WEBDESK: Renowned filmmaker and journalist Reham Khan has spoken out against actor and host Ali Safina over a controversial question he posed to actress and social media influencer Merub Ali. The incident, which has sparked debate on social media, unfolded during a podcast appearance where Safina’s remarks left Merub in an awkward position.
During the podcast, Safina unexpectedly asked Merub, “Does Asim Azhar sing for you?” before adding a pointed reference to singer Asim Azhar’s ex, actress Hania Aamir, by humming lyrics from a song: “Ve Hania Ve Dil Jania.” While Merub chose to ignore the remark and continued the conversation professionally, the moment quickly went viral, drawing criticism.
Reham Khan took to Instagram to express her disappointment, calling out Safina’s comments as inappropriate and unnecessary. In her video message, she questioned the ethics of putting a young woman in an uncomfortable situation for entertainment. “If a boy had been in her place, the situation might have been different. But making a girl feel uneasy by bringing up her partner’s ex-love life is neither funny nor acceptable,” she asserted.
“Mocking or humiliating someone in this manner is not humor—it is painful,” she added. She also pointed out that public figures who have been open about their relationships are still subjected to scrutiny and mockery long after their personal lives have moved on.
She criticised the culture of embarrassment and hypocrisy, adding, “Instead of encouraging honesty, we are teaching the younger generation to hide their truth for fear of ridicule. This needs to change.”
Drawing attention to the achievements of those involved in the situation, Reham compared the treatment of public figures in Pakistan to international recognition, stating, “While one of the individuals being targeted is receiving acknowledgment from the British Parliament, we are here trying to humiliate a young girl for no reason.”
Fans agree with Reham Khan and praising her.
