Hundreds of prisoners serving minor sentences in Sindh’s jails will be able to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their families, as the Sindh government has announced a four-month reduction in their sentences.
According to a report by ARY News, the Sindh government has decided to grant a 120-day (four-month) sentence reduction to prisoners on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Sindh Minister for Prisons, Ali Hassan Zardari, stated that the decision will benefit a total of 820 prisoners. However, he clarified that the pardon will not apply to those involved in anti-state activities, espionage, terrorism, rape, or dacoity.
It is worth noting that a day earlier, President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari also announced a special reduction of 200 days in prisoners’ sentences in celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr.
As a result, 183 prisoners were released from 43 jails across Punjab. The greatest impact of the sentence reductions was seen in Lahore’s Central Jail and Adiala Jail, where 196 prisoners were released from Central Jail Lahore alone.
