WEBDESK: Israel’s military has confirmed that Iran launched around 100 drones towards Israeli territory on Friday, following a series of Israeli air strikes across Iran.

Iran calls for emergency UNSC meeting after Israeli strikes

Iran has asked the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency meeting following Israeli airstrikes that targeted its nuclear and military sites earlier today, according to state media reports.

Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, submitted a formal letter requesting urgent action. In the letter, quoted by Tasnim news agency, he urged the Security Council to take “decisive action… against these criminal acts.”

The letter described the attacks as “a reckless, illegal and premeditated act,” accusing the “Zionist regime” of launching a series of coordinated strikes on nuclear sites and civilian infrastructure.

Iran says these actions are “a clear violation of the UN Charter and the fundamental principles of international law,” and warned they pose serious risks to both regional and global peace.

Iran launches long-range missiles at full power

According to Iranian media, long-range missiles have been launched at full power.

Earlier, Israel was on high alert due to the fear of retaliatory ballistic attacks from Iran.

According to foreign media, a state of emergency has been imposed in Israel and the government has advised citizens to stay near bomb shelters.

Earlier, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had already warned that Israel should expect severe punishment.

He said that Israel has chosen a bitter and painful fate for itself and there is no doubt that it will definitely receive this punishment.

Khamenei appoints new IRGC chief after Salami’s martydom

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has named Major General Mohammad Pakpour as the new head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to a report by Tasnim news agency.

This appointment comes after martydom of Hossein Salami, who was killed in Israeli airstrikes along with several other senior military officials as a result of unprovoked Israeli attacks.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to speak to the nation shortly, according to a post on his official X account.

“The Zionist regime will regret its action today,” the post stated.

Iran’s retaliatory attack

Military spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin told reporters, “Iran launched approximately 100 UAVs towards Israeli territory, which we are working to intercept.”

According to Defrin, the Israeli air campaign involved 200 fighter jets targeting nearly 100 locations across Iran. He said efforts were ongoing to shoot down the incoming drones, as both countries appear to be entering a dangerous phase of direct confrontation.

Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had said in a statement that Israel had “unleashed its wicked and bloody” hand in a crime against Iran and that it would receive “a bitter fate for itself”.

“The response to the Israeli attack will be harsh and decisive,” the official said, adding that details of Iran’s retaliation “are being discussed at the highest levels” when asked whether the attack would be imminent.
