Heatwave expected across Pakistan from April 13-18, warns PMD

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning that citizens may face an intense heatwave in the country from April 13 to April 18.

PMD has stated the development of a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere as the reason for expected heatwave.

According to details, majority districts across the country will face the intense heatwave; however, Sindh, Balochistan and Southern Punjab are expected to witness much intense heatwave from April 14.

The Met Office highlighted that the temperatures may rise by 6-8°C above normal temperatures during the peak hours (daytime).

While Southern region of the country will be experiencing intense rising temperatures, the Northern and central parts of country will also see increased temperatures, particularly during daytime.

Temperatures are expected to rise by 4-6°C above normal in upper and central Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir from April 14 to April 18.

While daytime temperatures will be much higher than night time weather but PMD warned that during this heatwave, night time temperatures will also stay high.

Citizens have been advised to avoid outdoor activities in order to avoid direct sun exposure and remain hydrated at all times.

PMD has also stated that the rising temperatures may also trigger dust storms and wind storms across some districts. These storms have the potential to damage solar panels, trees, vehicles.

Meanwhile, the intense rise in temperature may also lead to faster snowmelt in the mountains, potentially increasing the risks of floods.

Summer holidays 2025 in Punjab may begin earlier than usual as Th Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has written a letter to the Education Department, recommending changes in school timings and the possibility of starting summer vacations earlier due to the risk of a heatwave.

According to the PDMA, the letter has been sent to both the School Education Department and the Higher Education Department. The letter advises that school hours be revised and that an announcement be made regarding early summer holidays in case of extreme temperatures.
