WEBDESK: Harry Brook has officially been named England’s new white-ball cricket captain, taking over from Jos Buttler in both the One Day International (ODI) and T20I formats. The decision comes after England’s underwhelming run in the recent ICC Champions Trophy, where they failed to impress with their performances after which Jos Butler stepped down from captaincy

“It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain,” Brook said. “Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.”

At just 26 years old, Harry Brook has quickly become a standout player for England. Since his debut in 2022, he has made a strong impact across all formats and is currently ranked as the second-best Test batsman in the world. His calm presence at the crease and sharp cricketing mind helped him make a career best 317 against Pakistan in Multan.

“I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way,” Harry Brook said. “Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them.”

“There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I’m excited to get going and give it everything I’ve got.”

Harry Brook had already been serving as vice-captain in both ODI and T20 formats and even led the team during an ODI series against Australia. His promotion to full-time captain was influenced by Ben Stokes’s ongoing injury concerns and England’s need for a long-term leader. Ben Stokes had earlier decided to retire from the format in 2022 citing his workload.

Harry Brook has played 26 ODIs and 44 T20 matches, showing consistent form and playing a key role in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup win. As captain, his first challenge will be leading England in a white-ball series against the West Indies this May.

England’s managing director, Rob Key, praised Brook for his strategic mindset and leadership skills. He believes Brook is the right person to guide England toward future success in international cricket.
