Chinese automobile giant, BYD Auto Co., has revealed groundbreaking new charging technology that will allow users to fully charge their cars under five minutes.
BYD’s new battery and charging system will allow them to charge almost as fast as it takes a combustion engine car to refuel.
According to details, BYD’s new technology was tested on its new car Han L Sedan as it was able to provide 470 kilometers (292 miles) of range in 5 minutes.
Chairman and founder Wang Chuanfu on Monday announced this development stating that the company would roll out the latest technology from next month.
Usually, EV cars take longer times to completely charged, particularly, if the car is charged with domestic chargers. Following are the charging timings for EV cars:
- Home sockets (2.4kW): This is the most slowest method for recharging your EV car which can take up to 10 hours to charge an average car to 80 percent.
- 7kW Fast Charger: These chargers can also be used at home which takes almost 3 hours and 26 minutes for an average car.
- 22kW Rapid Charger: These types of chargers are usually found at petrol stations or public places which take about 1 hour for the average 40kWh electric car.
- Rapid Charging Point (50kW): Located at motorway service stations, provides faster charging times, taking 29 minutes for the average 40kWh car.
Given the traditional charging times for EV cars, BYD’s breakthrough technology has made waves among EV automobile companies globally.
BYD Global Sales
BYD fiercely rivals the Elon Musk-owned Tesla Inc. as the worlds top EV seller. Tesla’s sales have witnessed a decline globally as BYD made its entry into the EV automobile industry.
In 2024, BYD’s sales revenue beat Tesla’s for the first time in history as the company posted more than 200bn yuan ($28.2bn, £21.8bn) in revenues between July and September.
Tesla’s superchargers can add up to 275 kilometres of range in 15 minutes of charging. However, Tesla has a larger network of more than 65,000 Superchargers worldwide.
