WEBDESK: The Punjab Home Department has asked the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to introduce QR codes for online verification of all gun licences by law-enforcement agencies.

Law enforcement agencies will be able to instantly scan QR codes to instantly verify the authenticity of gun licenses.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Home Secretary, Noorul Amin Mengal. Senior officials including Special Secretary Fazal Rehman and Additional Secretary Imran Hussain Ranjha were also in attendance. He directed all divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners to put QR codes on arms licences orders. He said the licenses’ verification through QR codes would help identify and eliminate fake arms licences.

NADRA has been given one week to implement the system. Authorities have ordered that all gun licenses be linked to the holder’s national identity card.

“Individuals involved in serious crimes will be ineligible for arms licenses,” he said. “We are also making amendments to arms rules to simplify the process for law-abiding citizens and businesses.”

He directed the commissioners and deputy commissioners across the province to affix QR codes to all orders related to arms licenses.
