As the nation observes Ramadan in March, many people are wondering the expected date of Eidul Fitr, a significant Islamic festival at the conclusion of Ramadan.
The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) on February 25 disclosed that the Eidul Fitr would be observed on March 31, 2025.
SUPARCO in its press release stated that its forecast for the moon’s visibility was based on scientific assessments, astronomical calculations and modern observational data.
However, it also emphasised that the official announcement would be made by the official Ruet-i-Hilal Committee chaired by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad.
Eidul Fitr 2025
According to Ruet-i-Hilal Council’s Secretary General, Khalid Ijaz Mufti, the Shawwal moon is expected to be visible in the country on March 30.
He asserted: “The new moon will be born on Saturday, March 29, at 3:58 PM Pakistan time.” He also revealed that there are certain conditions that need to be met for the moon to be sighted including the minimum 18 hours old moon.
“The age requirement will be comfortably met, as well as the essential difference between sunset and moonset, which should be at least 40 minutes. This condition will be fulfilled in different cities of Pakistan.”
The Islamic calender is based on lunar calculation, with each month staring after the moon is sighted. Hence, the exact date of Eid would be determined by the moon’s visibility and the committee’s announcement on the night of March 30.
Eidul Fitr holds immense religious and cultural importance for Muslims across the globe as it concludes the holy month of Ramadan. On Eidul Fitr, Muslims also observe an Eid prayer which is performed two times in a year – once on Eidul Fitr and then on Eidul Azha.
In Pakistan, Eidul Fitr is marked by family gatherings, communal prayer, and feasts featuring the best dishes and sweets.
