Zakat deduction on bank accounts for Ramadan 2025 announced

WEBDESK (Azaad English): The Administrator General Zakat has officially announced the Zakat deduction and Zakat threshold for the Islamic year 1445-46 Hijri through an official notification. According to that notification, Zakat will be deducted from bank accounts holding a minimum balance of Rs. 179,689 on the first day of Ramadan 1446 Hijri.

Accordig to the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980, savings accounts, profit-and-loss sharing accounts, and similar deposit accounts will be subject to Zakat deduction. However, current accounts are exempt from this deduction.

The Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection has directed the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and other Zakat collection agencies to ensure proper deduction and deposit of Zakat funds. Banks will transfer the collected amount to the Central Zakat Account (CZ-08) at the SBP.

Zakat Deduction 2025 Details:

The official Zakat deduction date has been designated the first day of Ramadan, which is expected to fall on March 1 or 2, 2025, that depends on the moon sighting. The Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is expected to meet on February 28, Friday for moon sighting of Ramadan 2025.

The Zakat threshold was Rs135,179 in 2023 while in 2024 the zakat threshold was Rs103,159. However this year’s threshold has increased significantly to Rs179,689, reflecting economic changes and adjustments.

Zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, is a mandatory charity imposed on Muslims possessing wealth above the prescribed threshold. The collected funds are meant to support the poor and needy as per Islamic teachings.
