Users across the globe reported on Monday outages in social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), restricting millions of users form accessing the platform.

According to Downdetector, an online platform that provides users with real-time information about the status of various websites and services, users reported issues with X from the United States and United Kingdom as well.

The number of X outages reports rose to around 26,579 after falling briefly, according to Downdetector. The number was as high as 40,000 earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, UK users who reported of X outages also rose to more than 10,000 as the social media platform has not clarified the reason of the outage.

It should be highlighted that users across Pakistan are unable to access X using VPN. X is officially banned in Pakistan for over an year; however, government officials regularly post updates on the banned website.

Pakistan marked one year of X last February as government officials hinted that platform may not be restored anytime soon.

X (formerly Twitter) was banned by then-caretaker government in February 2024, soon after the general elections took place in the country. “The lifting of the ban on X is subject to control the PTI’s keyboard warriors’ onslaught against it on social media,” stated a senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader.

Human rights activist and journalists have long called for the restoration of the social media platform, criticising the government for this policy of censorship.

During the initial days of X ban, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) refused to acknowledge the ban; however, the interior ministry admitted about banning X in March 2024 during a Sindh High Court proceedings.

Downdetector showed that 65 reports were received about X outages from users in Pakistan at 3:02pm, indicating problems with the service. This surged to 109 reports at 9:32pm.

Users from Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi reported the majority of outages in accessing the social media platform.
