Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has criticised Donald Trump’s new tariffs, calling them a “very dumb thing to do” and pledging to fight back.

Trump has imposed a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico while also raising levies on Chinese goods. In response, Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs on US products, warning that a trade war would be costly for both sides.

Trump fired back on Truth Social, saying any Canadian tariffs would result in even higher US tariffs. Trudeau accused him of trying to destabilise Canada’s economy to make annexation easier. “We will never be the 51st state,” he said.

Trudeau emphasised that Canada’s priority is getting the tariffs removed as soon as possible, but also warned that his government is ready to push back aggressively. “A fight with Canada will have no winners,” he said.

Trump defended his decision, saying the tariffs protect US jobs and manufacturing while cracking down on illegal migration and drug trafficking.

Experts warn the tariffs will drive up costs, especially on food, oil, and gas. US consumers could see higher prices on groceries, while Canadian industries relying on US trade may suffer.

Trump about making Canada 51st state

In another news, Justin Trudeau met with King Charles III in the UK on Tuesday, as Trump continues to suggest that Canada should become the 51st US state.

Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of Canada joining the US. Last year, he even promised lower taxes for Canadians and suggested NHL legend Wayne Gretzky should run for Prime Minister.
