The Pakistan Dairy Association (PDA) has called on the government to review the 18 per cent General Sales Tax (GST) on packaged milk, warning that it is driving up milk prices and affecting its affordability for the general public.

During a meeting with Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan, PDA officials raised concerns about the tax’s burden on both producers and consumers, leading to higher prices for essential dairy products.

The association believes that reducing the GST would not only help maintain the availability of affordable milk but also support the overall sustainability of the dairy industry.

In response, Haroon Akhtar Khan recognised the concerns and noted the importance of boosting investment in dairy farming and processing to improve product quality and lower costs.

Although no immediate changes were announced, the government assured the PDA that it is committed to addressing the challenges faced by the dairy sector in collaboration with industry stakeholders. The PDA remains hopeful for a positive outcome that benefits both the industry and consumers.
