Chief Meteorologist Muhammad Afzal has warned that Pakistan is experiencing an unusual year with severe drought conditions.

During a press conference, he revealed that winter rainfall was 42 per cent below normal. According to him, the decline was most severe in Sindh (63 per cent), followed by Balochistan (53 per cent) and Punjab (41 per cent).

“Our dams and water reservoirs are nearing dead levels,” Afzal warned, adding that the upcoming rains are also expected to remain below average.

He further warned that northern Pakistan would receive less rainfall than usual, worsening the situation.

Earlier, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said the wet spell is expected between March 25 and 27, affecting upper and central areas, with snowfall forecasted over mountainous regions.

Islamabad, Potohar region, Murree, and Galiyat are also expected to receive rainfall and light snowfall. Meanwhile, central Punjab will see scattered rain showers during the same period.

In Sindh, dust storms are likely on March 25 and 26, while parts of Balochistan—including Quetta, Ziarat, Zhob, Musa Khel, Chaman, and Mastung—are expected to receive rain.
