Around 350 Afghan students have arrived in Pakistan to begin their studies in various universities under the Allama Muhammad Iqbal Scholarships offered by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
The students were welcomed at the HEC’s Peshawar Regional Centre in the reception, according to the press release.
According to HEC, the latest development to provide Afghan students opportunities is part of a larger effort to strengthen cultural cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The students will attend a preparatory course before joining the fall semester. In addition, 50 PhD and 100 Master’s students are expected to arrive in September 2025 to pursue higher education in Pakistan.
The Allama Muhammad Iqbal Scholarships Programme is funded by the Government of Pakistan. A total of 4,500 scholarships will be awarded to Afghan students under this programme.
The students were received by Nasir Shah, In-charge of the HEC Regional Centre Peshawar, and Jehanzeb Khan, Project Director of the scholarship programme.
Officials from the National University of Technology (NUTECH), Islamabad, and the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (NUCES-FAST), Faisalabad, were also present at the event.
The HEC stated that the programme shows the commitment of both countries to build strong academic ties.
Project Director Jehanzeb Khan said, “We are honoured to welcome these young ambassadors of Afghanistan to Pakistan. Their presence will not only enrich our academic institutions but will also strengthen the cultural and strategic bond between the two nations.”
