MUMBAI: On the International Women’s Day, a horrific incident took place when two women – an Israeli and an Indian – were gangraped and a man was killed near a famous UNESCO World Heritage site in southern India.

According to local police, the incident took place on Thursday when the foreign tourists along with their Indian friends visited the town of Hampi for stargazing.

Reportedly, the suspects had an altercation with the victims over money leading to killing one man and gangraping two women. Reuters reported that the criminals pushed the men into the Tungabhadra river canal before sexually assaulting the women.

Out of three men, two including an American national survived the jump into river while the body of one man was recovered on Saturday morning.

The group of friends were camping by the canal when they were approached by three men on a motorcycle who first asked for petrol before demanding Rs100. The group refused to entertain the suspects after when the assailants attacked them, pushing the men into canal and gangraping the women.

Condemnations from around the globe came as the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah strongly condemned the attack, saying: “It is a heinous attack. I have directed the authorities to swiftly apprehend those who are involved in this case. We have arrested two suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.”

“Our government is committed to ensuring the safety of everyone, including tourists, and will take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents.”

India has earned a sinister notoriety for sexual assaults on women as the police recorded 31,516 rape cases in 2022, a 20% increase from 2021 according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

Reportedly, the real figure is believed to be much higher than this statistic due to under-reporting of sexual crimes in India.
