LONDON: In an interesting development, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s son, Hasan Nawaz, has been declared a “deliberate tax defaulter” by the United Kingdom (UK) government.

UK’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) department declared Nawaz a tax defaulter because he did not pay £9.4 million in taxes between April 5, 2015 and April 6, 2016.

The UK government also imposed a huge £5.2 million penalty on Hasan Nawaz for not paying his taxes few years ago.

It is also worth mentioning that last year Hasan Nawaz had also been declared bankrupt by the London High Court in a tax case.

The official UK Gazette had published details of Hasan Nawaz’s bankruptcy. According to its details, Hasan was a resident of Flat 17 Avenfield House, 118 Park Lane, and the company director had been declared bankrupt in the High Court Of Justice in case No 694 of 2023; filed on 25 August 2023. The bankruptcy order was issued on April 29, 2024, on a case brought by the creditors over non-payment.

It should be highlighted that when a UK court declares any individual bankrupt, that individual cannot act as a director or be involved in management of a company. Only the court can discharge that individual from bankruptcy.

Geo News reported that Hasan Nawaz’s legal team argued that he had paid all his taxes in 2015-2016. According to sources, Nawaz’s legal team argues that the HMRC asked Hasan to pay more taxes several years later. Hasan had disputed the HMRC’s order and refused to pay more taxes.
