The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has sealed eight bottled water brands after they were found ‘unfit for human health’ in water samples tested by the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR).

The bottled water brands sealed by the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) are:

  • SS Water (Sahiwal)
  • Pak Acqua RO Mineral Water (Sahiwal)
  • Premium Safa Purified Water (Multan)
  • Orwell (Multan)
  • Natural Pure Life (Multan)
  • Life Inn Water Plant (Multan)
  • Sky Rain (Faisalabad)
  • Iced Well (Sialkot)

PFA Director General Asim Javed said the plants of these bottled water companies will remain sealed until they meet the following criteria:

  • Verified improvements in water quality
  • Mandatory medical tests for workers
  • Documented filter replacements

The PCRWR report states that some of the bottled water brands were infested with deadly bacteria, while others had dangerously high levels of potassium, sodium, and arsenic. Cholera and other gastrointestinal diseases, kidney illness, high blood pressure, nervous system issues, and possibly cancer are among the possible health effects.

PCRWR has previously expressed concerns regarding the quality of Pakistani bottled water. The pervasive problem of contaminated drinking water being marketed as mineral water has been brought to light by numerous studies throughout the years. Weak enforcement procedures permit inferior products to remain on the market, putting public health at risk, even in the face of regulatory scrutiny by the PSQCA.
