WEBDESK (Azaad English): The Russian Chess Federation has announced the death of Boris Spassky, the historic chess rival of American counterpart Bobby Fischer. He held the position of 10th World Chess Champion until his passing at age 88.
Spassky showed his chess skills early on after his birth in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) during 1937. At age 18 he became the most youthful chess grandmaster to ever exist. During 1969 Spassky secured the World Chess Championship title by overcoming Tigran Petrosian. The duration of his championship as world champion remained brief.
Spassky reacted with exceptional sports quality even though he surrendered his title position during the contest. Following the match he obtained the relief of relieving the weight that came with his championship title through his admission. Being the world champion delivered overwhelming pressure and obligations to both him and the entire Soviet chess infrastructure according to his later explanation.
Post his loss of world champion status Spassky maintained his chess activities. During the 1980s Spassky took part in international chess tournaments as a representative of France. Spassky left professional chess behind during the early 1990s but stayed active in the chess world through relaxed games.
