LAHORE: The long-awaited festival of Basant is set to be celebrated again in Lahore, with preparations underway to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. The anticipated Basant festival is expected to take place in February 2026, with safety measures and guidelines already in the works.

Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, formed a special committee dedicated for organising a secure Basant celebration. This committee will be responsible for planning the event and ensuring that the festival is held in a safe and responsible manner. According to sources, Basant will likely be celebrated in the city center, with two specific days under consideration for the event.

The committee overseeing Basant 2026 will include officials from various departments, such as the Lahore Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner, and the Director General of the Walled City Authority, alongside members from the Kite Flying Association. Together, they will ensure that all preparations align with safety guidelines and that the celebration will be enjoyable for all residents of Lahore.

Basant Safety Measures

In a bid to enhance safety, authorities are considering imposing restrictions on motorcycles in certain areas during the festival. This is part of a broader strategy to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of festival goers. The local administration will also play a key role in regulating the sale and distribution of kites and strings, ensuring they meet safety standards.

One of the most significant changes for Basant 2026 will be a focus on registered vendors. Only those who are officially registered with the district administration will be allowed to sell kites or prepare kite strings.

Additionally, there will be strict regulations about the materials used for kite string production. The use of glass-coated string, which has been a major cause of accidents in the past, will be prohibited. All kite strings will be monitored by the district administration to ensure compliance with safety protocols.

The decision to bring back Basant in a safe manner has been met with excitement, as the festival has been a cherished part of Lahore’s culture for many years.
