Azaad Fact Check exposes Indian media's false narrative on Kashmiri youth's killing

Webdesk: Azaad Fact Check has uncovered yet another disinformation campaign by Indian state-aligned media, this time, an attempt to portray the extra-judicial killing of an innocent Kashmiri youth, Parvez Ahmad, as a justified act by labelling him a “drug peddler.”

Once again, Indian media has aligned itself with the narrative of its ruling establishment, trying to mask state violence and glorify perpetrators. In another recent case, Parvez Ahmad, killed in the so-called fake encounter was labeled as a narcotics dealer, allegedly in a bid to misrepresent the truth and quell justice.

As Azaad Fact Check reports, the Indian media has reported that Parvez was killed in a shootout against suspected drug dealers in Jammu. However, no official or independent investigation into the incident has yet been conducted.

Parvez, a local youth from Kashmir, had reportedly gone out to buy medicine for his ailing mother when he was killed. Eyewitness accounts and statements from his family contradict the police version entirely. According to his family members, he was not involved in criminal activity or had any criminal history.

Even community members who have known him have testified to his good character and innocence as a quiet and decent person.

Locals and family members have termed the killing as an extra-judicial execution and they are demanding a transparent investigation and justice to Parvez.

The investigation conducted by the Azaad Fact Check has found that the event closely resembles a set up police encounter. Instead of looking into the context of the killing of Parvez, the Indian state-sponsored media was quick to proclaim without any verification that Parvez was a criminal, evidently in an effort to absolve state officials of any blame.

This case is yet another horrific illustration of how Kashmiri lives are unvalued by Indian policies and how their media platforms are misused to craft narratives, obscuring the existing reality of mass human rights violations on Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

The representation of the killing by the Indian media as a drug bust has been heavily criticised by Azaad Fact Check as dishonest and irresponsible. Without any formal investigation having taken place, the fervor to demonize a victim further aggravated the pain of a bereaved family.
