WEBDESK: Quetta Gladiators, the renowned franchise of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), has named former national team skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed as their new team director in a press conference on Wednesday.
Sarfaraz Ahmed, who captained the Gladiators to PSL victory in 2019, has been a central player for the franchise since the inception of the league. Quetta Gladiators owner Nadeem Omar said he was confident in Sarfaraz’s leadership and hoped Sarfaraz would continue to deliver the same excellence in his new role as Team Director.
Omar stated that Sarfaraz, together with former Test captain Moin Khan as Head Coach, would be a valuable asset to the franchise. He further added, “There is no better option for us than Sarfaraz Ahmed. He is the heart and soul of the Gladiators, and we cannot lose him.”
With Sarfaraz as captain, the team went to the finals in 2016 and 2017, and became champion in 2019. The franchise had let him go a few weeks ago with captaincy duties being taken over by Rilee Roussou in 2023. In his Quetta Gladiators career, he appeared in 86 games, making 1,525 runs at an average of 29.32, including seven half-centuries.
Earlier, prior to the 10th edition of PSL, Sarfaraz had parted his ways from the Gladiators. He was part of the players draft, but none of the teams picked him. As such, he was appointed the team director of Quetta Gladiators.
Nadeem Omar also confirmed that Sarfaraz’s affiliation with the franchise cannot be replaced, and the Gladiators are determined to retain him in a key position for the future.
