The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to remove mulberry trees, the biggest contributor to pollen allergies in Islamabad.

The meeting, in which the decision was taken, was attended by environmental expert Rizwan Mahboob, experts from the Baku team, and senior officers from CDA’s Environment Wing.

History of mulberry trees in Islamabad

The mulberry trees were planted in Islamabad in the 1960s to make the capital artificially green. The paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera), a non-native species, was widely planted because of its fast growth and adaptability to the local climate. However, as time passed, it became a significant source of pollen allergies, particularly in the spring, causing serious health problems for residents. By the late 1990s, officials acknowledged the issue and began phased removal efforts. Despite these attempts, paper mulberry continues to be prevalent.

They release excessive pollen in spring, causing severe allergies, asthma, and respiratory issues.

The mass planting of paper mulberry trees as a means of beautifying Islamabad led to a spike in pollen allergies.

Although they were intended as part of a significant afforestation initiative, paper mulberry trees are notorious for producing an unhealthy amount of pollen, making them one of the leading causes of severe allergy cases, particularly during spring (March to April).

This year too, the pollen count in Islamabad has reached alarming levels. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, on March 11, the pollen count of paper mulberry was very high, causing citizens to suffer from pollen-related allergies.
