Pakistan and Turkiye have unveiled an ambitious plan to strengthen their already warm ties, with a focus on elevating economic cooperation. The target is to boost bilateral trade to US$5 billion, a goal set during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent visit to Pakistan.
In a conversation with Business Recorder, a senior diplomat from Turkiye, who requested anonymity, detailed the strategic efforts underway to enhance Pakistan’s exports to Turkiye.
The diplomat highlighted the growing partnership between the two nations, particularly in defence, and reaffirmed the commitment to reaching the $5 billion trade milestone.
Focusing on economic collaboration, the diplomat revealed that efforts are underway to expand exports of Pakistani sports and surgical goods to Turkiye. “Turkiye’s embassy officials recently visited Sialkot to initiate this process, aiming to strengthen trade ties,” he shared.
The diplomat also emphasised the deep historical and cultural connections between Pakistan and Turkiye, noting the shared traditions, media, and historical narratives. “Pakistan has always stood by Turkiye, from the Khilafat Movement to the Cyprus issue. Our brotherhood remains unshakable,” he stated.
Regarding educational collaboration, the diplomat highlighted Pakistan’s significant student exchange programme with Turkiye. He mentioned that nearly 1.5 million Pakistani students pursue higher education in Turkiye each year.
“There are great opportunities for collaboration, and we’re working to revitalise institutions for mutual progress,” he added. Praising Pakistan’s educational achievements, he noted that Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad’s inclusion in the top 500 global universities is a matter of pride, and Turkiye may consider sending its students there.
On the topic of security, the diplomat stressed both nations’ shared commitment to combatting terrorism. “We stand together against any form of terrorism,” he affirmed.
