Three more cases filed under PECA law over fake video targeting CM Punjab

LAHORE: Three more cases have been registered against social media users for running a propaganda campaign against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and state institutions.

The cases have been registered at Shahdara, Shahdara Town, and Kot Lakhpat police stations.

Khalid Yasin, a resident of Asif Raza Town Lahore registered a complaint with Shahdara Police Station saying he encountered provocative content on social media targeting a national institution.

He said that he saw the post that appeared on ‘’AMAZON GADGETS” that included hateful and provocative content. The account, which had 386,000 followers, spread the post inciting hostility against a national institution.

Shahdara Police have registered the case under sections 11/20 of PECA and sections 500, 504, and 505(1)C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Another FIR has been filed by Muhammad Amir, a resident of Shahdara Town, at Shahdara Town Police Station. He said that encountered a malicious video circulating on social media. The video, posted on February 18, 2025, targeted the Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz.

He said in his statement that the video was uploaded from a Facebook account named “Rana Mohammad Dawood” and quickly went viral. Amir claims that the video, accompanied by fake images, aimed to create a negative public mindset and stir unrest. The post, which was intended to defame the Chief Minister, spread false information to provoke public dissent and create chaos.

He said that the post is part of an organised campaign using AI-generated fake images and videos to defame individuals for malicious purposes and fuel unrest.

The Shahdara Police Station has registered a case under sections 11/20 of PECA and sections 500, 504, and 505(1)C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). The case has been forwarded to the Investigation Wing for further inquiry.
