WEBDESK: In a new update, YouTube has officially ended support for several older iPhones. This means that users with certain iPhone models will no longer be able to install or update the YouTube app on their devices.
The latest update by the video-sharing platform now only supports iPhones running iOS 16 or later. As a result, popular models like the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, iPhone 7, 7 Plus, and iPhone SE (first generation) are affected. These devices, which are limited to iOS 15, will no longer be compatible with the YouTube app.
The YouTube app cannot be used on older iPhones, but people can still use the YouTube website with these devices. Therefore, some features, for example offline video downloads, are not available on browsers.
Apple’s recent announcement that the iPhone 6 is outdated led to this decision. It’s usual for tech companies to cease supporting old phones because they can’t handle the newer software and updates.
Earlier, WhatsApp also ended its service for older iPhones on June 1, 2025. Now, WhatsApp only works on devices with iOS 15.1 or later. Following the same pattern, YouTube has now limited its app usage to newer devices.
If you still use an older iPhone, it may soon be the right time to upgrade. Dropping support for older models by apps like YouTube may make it more difficult for users to keep using them.
From June 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer function on older iPhones and Android models. You can use the messaging app only on devices that support updated operating systems.
This decision affects phones released before 2014, making it impossible for these older models to use WhatsApp. According to the company, WhatsApp, older iPhones will now be supported only on devices running iOS 15.1 or later. iPhones with older software will no longer be able to install, update, or access WhatsApp.
The same rule applies to Android phones. WhatsApp will work only on smartphones with Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or newer. Older Android models are now excluded from the list of supported devices.
Some of the devices that need to be replaced are the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6X, Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X and Sony Xperia Z. People wondered if iPhone 6S, 6S Plus and the first iPhone SE would be removed from the good-product list. These models are confirmed by tech sources to still use WhatsApp, since they have iOS 15.8.4 installed.
WhatsApp, older iPhones and older Android phones often lack the ability to run the latest app features and updates. That’s why the company removes support for outdated devices every year.
