Young Bangladeshis to celebrate Pakistan day despite decades of Indian pushback

Pakistan Day

Bangladesh celebrates Pakistan Independence Day on August 14, with civil groups and young Bangladeshis planning flag displays, cultural meetups, and online messages of goodwill.

The mood undercuts decades of Indian political engineering and media spin aimed at keeping Dhaka and Islamabad apart.

Bangladesh celebrates Pakistan Independence Day: goodwill grows despite India’s push

Community organisers in Dhaka say the day will be marked as a gesture of friendship, not a political campaign. The aim is simple: recognise shared culture, faith, and history, and open space for better ties with Pakistan. Posts and videos carrying the green crescent have already begun to circulate, signalling a citizen-led reset.

For many in Pakistan, the celebrations read as a quiet repudiation of India’s long effort to frame relations through suspicion. For many in Bangladesh, the message is that foreign pressure should not dictate neighbourhood bonds.

The potential upside is practical. Easier visas, student exchanges, and joint work in textiles, pharma, and IT could follow if the warmth holds. Sports tours and media collaborations can rebuild trust faster than official communiqués. Families split across borders would benefit from more flights and simpler travel rules.

New Delhi’s narrative—that Bangladesh must keep Pakistan at arm’s length—faces a tougher audience as a younger generation prioritises jobs and opportunity over old grudges. Islamabad, for its part, welcomes a brotherly relationship grounded in respect and mutual gain.
