WEBDESK: The Punjab Meteorological Department has announced that the monsoon season in Rawalpindi will run from June 15 to August 15. To prepare for heavy rainfall, the city will start cleaning its main drains, including the flood-prone Nullah Leh, from May 1.

This yearly cleanup covers the 22-kilometer-long Nullah Leh and 13 other major stormwater drains. WASA, the water and sanitation authority, has requested Rs. 140 million from the Punjab government to carry out the work. Of this, Rs. 80 million is needed for cleaning and deepening an 11-kilometer stretch of Nullah Leh. The remaining Rs. 60 million will go toward cleaning other storm drains across the city.

Officials noted that although fuel, machinery, and labor costs have gone up this year, the Punjab government has rejected the request for increased funding. Last year, the same amount was approved.

Monsoon rains in Rawalpindi often bring the risk of urban flooding, especially in areas near Nullah Leh. For the past 50 years, this drain has caused severe flooding during the rainy season. Around 11 kilometers of it pass through the city, while the rest flows through Rawalpindi and Chaklala Cantonment.

WASA officials stress that timely cleaning is critical to prevent blockages and overflow during the monsoon. Authorities are urging the public to stay alert and cooperate during the maintenance work.

With the monsoon season approaching fast, preparations are in full swing. The city hopes that early action will help reduce the damage caused by seasonal rains and keep residents safe this year.
