WhatsApp scam alert: a parcel code message wiped 50K

WEBDESK: There is a recently discovered WhatsApp scam that has left various families in Pakistan surprised and concerned. In this scam, hackers gain access to an individual WhatsApp account and send messages to their contacts requesting them to send money.

WhatsApp Scam Unfolded

In a recent case, a couple in Pakistan received messages from a close family member early in the morning. The messages claimed that he was in urgent need of money and asked them to transfer Rs50,000 to a JazzCash number. The couple, worried about their relative, quickly sent the money.

However, when the scammer asked for another Rs100,000, they decided to call the family member directly on his private number.

To their surprise, he informed them that his WhatsApp had not been working since morning. He explained that someone had called him pretending to be from a parcel delivery service. The caller asked for a code that was sent to his phone. Not knowing it was his WhatsApp verification code, he shared it, and his account was immediately hacked.

How to Protect Yourself from scam

To protect yourself from this growing WhatsApp scam, enable two-step verification on your WhatsApp account. This adds an extra security layer by requiring a PIN whenever your account is accessed on a new device.

Stay alert and inform your family and friends about this WhatsApp scam. Sharing awareness is the best way to stop these criminals from targeting more innocent people.
