The National T20 Cup, Pakistan’s premier domestic T20 tournament, has been the subject of much discussion, particularly concerning the inclusion and subsequent withdrawal of veteran cricketer Wahab Riaz.

Wahab Riaz’s initial inclusion in the Lahore Whites squad sparked considerable debate. Critics argued that his presence would deprive younger players of valuable opportunities. Concerns were raised about the inclusion of former selector and current PCB mentor as a player in the National T20 Cup.

Ultimately, due to immense pressure, particularly visible on social media, Wahab Riaz withdrew from the National T20 Cup, citing personal reasons.

The role of former players in both administrative and playing capacities raises ethical considerations, and the entire situation has brought attention to the peculiar dynamics of Pakistan’s domestic cricket.

The National T20 Cup remains a vital tournament, but the events surrounding Wahab Riaz’s inclusion have prompted discussions about the future of player development and the role of veteran cricketers in PCB.

Pakistan’s white-ball cricket is already in dire straits, mainly due to the stubborn nature of the PCB think tank to take progressive decisions. The needless urge to prefer veterans over promising youngsters, particularly in T20, a format tailored for budding cricketers to display aggression & flamboyance, made absolutely zero sense.

The PCB needs to lay out a clear policy to avoid a situation of similar sorts in the future. Conflict-of-interest-related issues need to be addressed on a priority basis to ensure complete meritocracy.
