WEBDESK: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced new US trade tariffs targeting India, China, the European Union, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and Brazil in a bold move to address trade imbalances. The tariffs, set to take effect on April 2, come as a direct response to what Trump calls “highly unfair” taxation on American products.

During his speech to Congress on Wednesday, Trump specifically criticized India’s 100% tariff on U.S. automobiles.

Trump revealed that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was personally informed that India would not be exempt from these US trade tariffs during his last visit to Washington. Other nations, including China, the EU, and Brazil, were also accused of charging significantly higher tariffs on American goods.

“For years, these countries have been collecting tariffs from us. Now it’s our turn,” said Donald Trump.

He argued that nations such as the EU, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Canada charge the US significantly higher tariffs than Washington imposes on their goods. “It’s very unfair,” he said.

The President said that his administration will no longer tolerate unfair trade practices, saying that if other nations block U.S. products through non-financial barriers, America will respond in kind.

This announcement comes in favour of his broader protectionist agenda, which has already imposed US trade tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. His policies, aimed at reducing trade imbalances, drug trafficking, and illegal immigration have faced strong criticism from global leaders.
