WEBDESK: The United States has warned that it may stop trying to help bring peace to Ukraine if talks don’t move forward soon, President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday. President Donald Trump made it clear that he wants to see quick results in the peace process between Ukraine and Russia.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently held talks in Paris with European and Ukrainian leaders. He said that Ukraine and Russia must show real progress in the coming days, or the US will stop its peace efforts. President Trump added, “We want to get it done quickly,” and explained that if either side delays, the US will step back from its role.
“Quickly, we want to get it done,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “Now if for some reason one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just going to say, ‘you’re foolish, you’re fools, you’re horrible people, and we’re going to just take a pass. But hopefully we won’t have to do that.”
The Paris meeting was the first in-person discussion as part of a renewed peace push led by the US. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the talks “constructive,” and US Vice President JD Vance also expressed hope for an end to the conflict.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said some progress on a peace settlement had already been made but that contacts with Washington were difficult. He said Russia was striving to resolve the conflict while ensuring its own interests. Moscow remained open to dialogue with the United States, he added.
More peace talks are planned in London next week. Ukraine will consider a new plan that includes a 30-day ceasefire covering land, air, and sea operations.
Earlier, Trump said he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. Now, his team hopes for peace by April or May. The US government’s message is clear: Ukraine and Russia must act fast, or America will walk away from trying to help.
