UN Security Council hears Pakistan’s call for peaceful Iran solution

WEBDESK: Following an attack by the United States on Iranian nuclear facilities, Pakistan has strongly condemned the action at an emergency session of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, expressing full support for Iran’s right to self-defence and advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

During the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Iran, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar, thanked the council for convening the urgent session.

He unequivocally condemned the attack on Iran’s nuclear installations, calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and reiterating Pakistan’s firm support for Iran’s right to defend itself.

Ambassador Iftikhar highlighted that council members had been apprised of the escalating tensions in previous sessions.

He stated that Pakistan has consistently maintained a principled stance per the UN Charter, urging that diplomacy be given a chance to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

“We want a peaceful solution to the conflict,” he stressed.

He further asserted that the attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities constitutes a violation of UN resolutions, emphasizing that member states have to comply with Security Council resolutions.

Ambassador Iftikhar called upon the council to take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions.

International calls for de-escalation, diplomacy at UN emergency meeting

Speaking at the emergency session, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that people of the region”cannot afford further devastation” and called to put an end to fighting.

He demanded a serious negotiation over nature of Iranian nuclear program, saying that all what the UN could do was to help any initiatives to a peaceful solution.

In the meantime, Rafael Grossi, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head, stated that the big craters were noted at Fordow location after the US assault.

He asked Iran to sit at the negotiating table, warning of “further destruction” if peace is not given a chance.

The Chinese representative to United Nations also spoke at the meeting asking all parties to the conflict, especially Israel, to have an immediate ceasefire.

The envoy has stated that the diplomacy to deal with the problem of nuclear issue in Iran is not over and hopes that it will have a peaceful solution.
