Portugal has picked up their second Nations League title by beating holders Spain 5-3 on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw.

Portugal’s Mendes, who scored their opener, has been named player of the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s 40-year-old skipper, has now won three international trophies for the country.

Two UEFA Nations League trophies (2019, 2025) and the European Championship in 2016.

He also played a significant role in Portugal’s victory tonight, scoring the all-important equaliser in the second half, which forced the contest into extra time and, eventually, penalties.

Winners of the 2023 edition, Spain had opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Martin Zubimendi poked home after Portugal failed to clear their lines.

Their lead was short-lived as Nuno Mendes slammed a low, angled strike past Unai Simon and into the far corner of the net five minutes later.

Mikel Oyarzabal, who netted a late winner in last summer’s European Championship final against England, restored La Roja’s advantage before the break.

Earlier on Sunday, Kylian Mbappé led France to defeat host Germany 2-0 in Stuttgart, securing third place.

The Real Madrid forward helped Les Bleus bounce back from a sluggish first half by scoring one goal and setting up another for Michael Olise.

The goal was Mbappe’s 50th for France in international competition.
