According to astronomists, Muslims around the globe will experience a rare phenomenon of two Ramadans in a single year.

Holy month of Ramadan holds immense importance amongst Muslims around the world as it represents the month of forgiveness and reflection. Muslims are obligated to keep fast from sunrise to sunset every single day in the month of Ramadan.

It is a sacred time of spiritual and physical submission through offering fasts and prayers. In 2030, the Ramadan month will occur twice in the same year – first in January and then again in December.

This is due to the fact that the lunar year will be 10-12 days shorter than the solar year. Typically, the holy month moves ahead by 10-11 days each year due to lunar calendar. It should be highlighted that Islamic calendar is lunar.

It merits a mention that that this rare occurrence happens every 33 years with the last such phenomenon taking place in 1997.

Now the world will get to experience two holy months of Ramadan in 2030. After that year, the world will not experience two consecutive holy months in the same year until 2063.

The Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will be meeting on February 28, 2025 in Peshawar for moon sighting. If the moon is sighted on February 28, then the first fast will be observed on March 1st this year.

The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), however, on Monday stated that the probability of moon, for being sighted on February 28 is “extremely low” in Pakistan. According to the its forecast, the holy month of Ramadan would begin on March 2.
