India reacts to Trump’s 25% tariff announcement

Trump's 25% tariff announcement

India has responded to US President Donald Trump’s 25% tariff announcement.

Reacting to this, Modi-led India said it is assessing the implications of the move and remains committed to a fair trade agreement with the States.

According to the country, the US and India have been engaged in bilateral discussions over the past few months to reach a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial trade deal.

Earlier, President Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods. The new tariff will take effect from August 1st, 2025. Trump made the announcement through a post on his social media account.

He also warned that if India refuses to pay the tariff, an additional penalty will be applied. Trump criticised India for charging the US high tariffs over the years. He said that this situation will not continue.

Trump made it clear that there will be no extensions on the deadline. “1st August is the final date,” he said. “There will be no further time given.”

In his statement, Trump also attacked India’s trade policies. He called India’s tariffs some of the highest in the world. He added that India creates serious trade barriers that make it hard for US companies to do business there.

Trump also targeted India’s defence and energy relations with Russia. He said India buys most of its military equipment from Russia and is a major buyer of Russian oil and gas along with China. He called these actions “not good”, especially during the ongoing war in Ukraine.
