The United States’ (US) State Department has said that President Donald Trump is willing to settle the longstanding Kashmir dispute.

The department’s spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, also talked about Pakistani parliamentary delegation led by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

“State Department officials, including Under Secretary for Political Affairs Hooker, met with the Pakistani parliamentary delegation during a visit they had to Washington last week. She reiterated US support for the ongoing ceasefire — as you might imagine, thank God — between Pakistan and India. They also discussed important issues to the bilateral relationship, including counterterrorism cooperation”, she said.

“We also know that Deputy Secretary Landau met with the Indian parliamentary delegation last week, and he also reaffirmed the United States’ strong support of India in the fight against terrorism, and strategic partnership between those two countries,” Bruce added.

Bilawal and his team remained in the US for a week in which he met with more than a dozen members of the US House of Representatives and Senate.

Trump about Kashmir

It is pertinent to mention that Trump, on several occasions, has taken credit for the ceasefire between Pakistan and India. After the agreement, he posted on social media: “I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir.”

When asked about any follow-up on Trump’s offer, the spokesperson said, “It should not surprise anyone that he would want to manage something like that. He not only seems to be, but truly is, the only one who has brought certain people to the table for conversations that once seemed impossible.”
