Webdesk: The launch of the Tesla Model Y India formally occurred on Tuesday when the chief executive of the company, Elon Musk, brought the top-selling electric SUV to the third-largest vehicle market in the world. The Tesla Model Y price in India is around $70,000 (6 million rupees). This model is the priciest market for this product globally due to the 70 per cent import duty and around 30 per cent luxury tax in the nation.
While the vehicles themselves are being shipped from China as Tesla launched in the United States, deliveries of the Tesla Model Y India model are to commence in the third quarter of 2025.
Tesla has already launched its first showroom in Mumbai and plans to launch one more in New Delhi. Factories do not produce the right-hand drive variants needed for Indian roads.
Tesla Model Y price in India is around $70,000, India rear-wheel drive and $79,500 (6.8 million rupees) for the long-range model with an extra 600,000 rupees to get Tesla’s Full Self-Driving package.
The company is clearly targeting India’s premium EV sector, which represents just 4 per cent of all automobile sales.
The Tesla Model Y India strategy sets the company up for a fight against luxury competition such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz instead of competing in the volume EV space dominated by cheap domestic players such as Tata Motors and Mahindra Auto.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, during the launch event, urged Tesla to look into domestic R&D and manufacturing, because of which they could cut down on prices in the future.
Isabel Fan, Tesla’s Director of Southeast Asia, confirmed that there were plans to create a network of service centres, charging points, and experience centres across the country.
Due to the Tesla Model Y price in India, the majority of people cannot afford it. Experts such as Vivek Vaidya of Frost & Sullivan believe that luxury buyers will still be present across all price levels, although the outrageous price tag of the Tesla won’t yet impact the mass market.
Despite falling global sales and excess production, Tesla has determined that importing the Tesla Model Y to India is the fastest path to market, even amid ongoing negotiations between India and the US. They may reduce tariffs and make future models more accessible.
However, for now, due to the Tesla Model Y price in India, it seems to be quite out of reach of the local population, no matter how much the government boasts about it.
