WEBDESK: On April 5, 2025, the region of Swat was jolted by a 4.6 magnitude earthquake, sending tremors through Mingora and surrounding areas, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC). The earthquake struck in the morning, causing brief panic among local residents. People quickly rushed outdoors as a precaution, with many turning to prayers for safety.

Tremors were also felt in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush Mountain range, about 64 kilometres deep. Despite the strong tremors, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties from the Swat earthquake. Local authorities have yet to release further details, but initial reports suggest that the earthquake did not cause widespread destruction.

Though the Swat earthquake tremors lasted only for a brief period, their intensity was sufficient to create widespread panic among the population, who have been on edge following last week’s strong earthquake that shook Islamabad, Peshawar, and various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Though the frequency of these tremors in the Swat earthquake raises concerns, authorities have not reported any major incidents. However, local officials are urging residents to remain alert and follow safety measures during seismic activities.

Meanwhile, Last Friday’s 7.7-magnitude earthquake, one of Myanmar’s strongest in a century, jolted a region home to 28 million, toppling buildings such as hospitals, flattening communities and leaving many without food, water and shelter.

Deaths rose to 3,085 on Thursday, with 4,715 injured and 341 missing, the ruling junta said.
