WEBDESK: India’s fragile infrastructure has once again become the target of public trolling and ridicule after just a few hours of heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding and waterlogging in Surat on Tuesday.
Social media users wasted no time mocking the Surat’s drainage and planning failures, as images and videos of submerged roads and waterlogged homes spread rapidly online.
The situation turned serious in the Palanpore area, where the compound wall of Orchid Elite collapsed next to a construction site. More than 100mm of rain inundated several low-lying areas, blocking major roads and leaving residents struggling to wade through water-filled streets.
According to SubDivisional Magistrate Jigna Parmar, two state roads and multiple residential societies are currently waterlogged. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported so far. “Due to over 100 mm of rainfall, two state roads are waterlogged. Four to five societies in the low-lying area are waterlogged, but no loss has been reported till now,” Parmar confirmed.
She urged the public to cooperate with the authorities and added that water levels should recede gradually as the rain eases.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall in Gujarat through Wednesday and issued an orange alert for eastern Rajasthan, warning of thunderstorms and intense weather until June 27.
The Kota division covering Baran, Kota, Bundi, and Jhalawar districts faces potential rainfall exceeding 200mm within 24 hours, with the Baran region already experiencing a flood-like situation after continuous overnight downpours.
Jaipur, Udaipur, and Bharatpur divisions are also expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall. Residents have been advised to remain cautious through June 24 and 25.
Indians are bashing the so called ‘progress’ their politicians brag about, asking if this is the development they promised. People are mocking their leaders.
