WEBDESK: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has expressed concerns over team selection ahead of the final T20I against New Zealand. He believes that both Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shadab Khan should be rested for the match, arguing that their recent performances have not been up to the mark.
Speaking to the media, Shahid Afridi questioned the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection policies, particularly the decision to include Shadab Khan as vice-captain. He pointed out that Shadab has not shown consistent performance in domestic cricket to justify his recall.
Afridi also criticized the frequent changes in leadership and coaching staff, stating that such instability is hurting Pakistan cricket. According to Shahid Afridi, the team needs consistency in decision-making to achieve long-term success.
With Pakistan struggling in the New Zealand series, Afridi’s comments have sparked debate among fans and analysts. His views highlight the need for a stable selection process and a focus on merit-based decisions.
“For the final game, the players on the bench should be given a chance – with the series lost, Shadab and Shaheen can be rested and replacements given an opportunity,” Afridi wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Shadab, returning to international cricket after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, struggled for form, scoring just 30 runs in three innings at an average of 10. With the ball, he managed only one wicket in four matches.
Shaheen’s performance was also below expectations, taking two wickets in as many games at an average of 66.50 and an economy rate of 10.23.
Pakistan will conclude their tour of New Zealand with the final T20I in Wellington on Wednesday.
As the final T20I approaches, it remains to be seen whether the PCB will take Shahid Afridi’s advice and make changes to the playing XI.
