India has recovered a second black box from the wreckage of Air India crash.
British investigators are assisting the Indian team in this case. A team of four officials from the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), with expertise in aircraft operations, engineering and flight data, is now working in Ahmedabad alongside American and Indian counterparts.
The first black box was discovered on Friday. The teams will examine cockpit voice recordings, flight data and maintenance records and is expected to submit a report within three months.
It is pertinent to mention that only one man survived the plane crash, and according to him, the plane went down within seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad.
According to Indian media, the government is considering temporarily grounding Air India’s Boeing 787 fleet.
How did the Air India crash happen?
Early reports suggest that the crash happened because of the pilot error. However, there is no confirmation.
The Air India AI-171 flight departed from Ahmedabad airport in the western state of Gujarat at 1.39pm local time (8.09am BST) on Thursday (12 June). There were 242 passengers and crew on board
However, after issuing a mayday call, it crashed into residential area of Meghani Nagar just five minutes after takeoff. The airplane struck a medical college, before bursting into flames.
Images and videos from the city showed plumes of smoke pouring from the wreckage of the plane as emergency services rushed to the scene.
Recovery efforts are currently underway to retrieve the bodies of the passengers from the plane and the college students who are believed to be trapped under the debris.
